The standard of the Coton de Tulear

Cathy makes clear her priorities:

We only sell dogs registered in the LOF. This means that all our pups are the offspring of two pedigree parents, and of veritable origin.

A true pedigree pup will have all the characteristics of the race, and no imperfections. A breeder of pedigree dogs is exigent about maintaining the standard of the breed. He is not swayed by fashion into modifying breed standards. Nor does he believe that a dog needs to be shown in order to prove its quality. A dog’s pedigree –its parentage- is all that really counts.

A few points about Cotons de Tulear as a breed:

A Coton de Tulear is a jolly little dog, playful, lively but not boisterous. More than anything, it wants to be loved: and everyone, old and young, seems to fall in love with Coton de Tulear.

A Coton de Tulear is comfortable both indoors and out: a very adaptable dog. It loves going for walks in all weathers. It gets on well with other dogs and, indeed other animals in general. It is good around children. It is devoted to his owners. It makes a wonderful family pet.

A Coton de Tulear is not simply a ball of fluff, however! It is an intelligent- animal, with a will of its own, and needs to be trained right from the start (otherwise it will play all sorts of tricks on you!). As soon as it has settled down in its new home, it needs to be trained to obey your voice and to follow basic commands.

As with most dogs, the way to approach training is through a mix of motivation and reward.

We offer our clients and their pups a free training session, sponsored by our partners Royal Canin. We recommend this. The training is a positive pleasure for pup and new owner alike!

Cotons de Tulear are very robust dogs. We had pups of only 4 months play happily out in the snow in mid-winter. Adults remain active into a ripe old age. One of our dogs lived to be 16, enjoying a completely normal life right to the end.

It is probably fair to say that the males tend to be more "cool" types, laidback, while the females are full of energy. But of course every dog is different in his or her own way.

There is no simple type of owner that matches a Coton de Tulear !

The Coton de Tulear is right for all sorts of people, provided that the right pup is matched up with the right person. One of the keys to selling a pup successfully is to math its personality to that of its future owner.

A Coton de Tulear needs a fair amount of grooming, to keep its long white fur looking its best. The grooming need not be excessive however: brushing for ten or fifteen minutes twice a week is enough, with a bath about once a month. Of course, for show dogs, more grooming is needed, but for a pet, the basic grooming suggested above will be perfectly adequate.

Grooming and bathing a Coton de Tulear is something children enjoy doing: both dogs and children seems to have fun. My daughter, Aurélie do this very carefully and her dog, Diablo d’Ivandry is absolutely clean and Aurélie is 13 year old.

If keeping a Coton de Tulear well groomed is too onerous, it is better to clip it. It can look perfectly attractive with shorter hair. If hair is left long but ungroomed, it can cause skin problems. However, a Coton de Tulear presented before a judge for “confirmation” must have long hair if it is to pass, so clipping should be left until later.
